Does The Bible Even Mention The Word Halloween?

There is no specific chapter or verse in the bible that mentions Halloween as a holiday to be observed nor does it mention the word Halloween AT ALL!

This is a bit shocking seeing that over 180 million people celebrated Halloween in 2020.

The question that keeps ringing in my head is, “how many of those people were Christians”?

Unfortunately, I don’t have the answer to that question but I can tell you that according to learnreligions.com, there are well past 2 billion Christians on the planet today, and Christianity remains the largest religion in the world.

With these statistics, I can comfortably say that Christians are celebrating Halloween.

Heck, I myself have celebrated Halloween in the past as a fully devoted Christian and I did as a child as well.

It wasn’t until I started to get curious and ask questions like, “what does the bible say about Halloween”? that my perspective started to change.

What Does The Bible Say About Halloween?

As I stated previously, the word Halloween doesn’t even exist in the bible. What’s interesting is that the word Hallowed appears 22 times in the bible.

Does that word sound familiar? Scriptural references use “hallowed be thy name” referring to the name of God. Interesting right? I found the similarity in these two words strikingly similar.

In my quest to answer, what does the bible say about Halloween, I looked up the word hallowed by using a concordance to get the true meaning of the word.

The word hallowed can be found in the Greek and Hebrew dialect of the bible (depending on the scripture the word is found in), which can give different meanings to the word itself.

However, after my research, I found that the word hallowed means the following

  • When used in the Greek it means to make holy, to purify or consecrate
  • When used in the Hebrew it means to consecrate, dedicate, or a sacred place or thing

Clearly, this has nothing to do with Halloween (even though the words are strikingly similar).

Typically, things that go against God try and portray similarities to be as close to the real thing as possible. For example, Anti-Christ. The word Christ is there; however, adding anti means against Christ.

I believe Halloween goes against the things of God and naming a holiday that’s rooted in death, darkness, and witchcraft as Halloween feels like a copycat to the word Hallowed that is used to glorify the name of God. Feels like a slap in the face!

All in all, the bible doesn’t have anything to say specifically about Halloween as a celebrated holiday.

Now, that doesn’t mean the bible doesn’t have anything to say about the types of activities that take place on Halloween and how this holiday really got started.

So, if the bible doesn’t even mention the word Halloween, then where did it come from?

I’m glad you asked. Let’s take a quick look at the origin of Halloween.

This article is all about what does the bible say about Halloween

The Bible Doesn’t Mention Halloween. Where Did It Come From?

  1. Originated from a pre-Christian pagan festival called Samhain that was celebrated by the ancient Celtics.
  2. The ancient Celtics lived about 2,000 years ago and have rooted origins in Ireland.
  3. Samhain, which also took place on October 31st, was used to honor the dead, interact with the otherworld, and usher in the dark half of the year.
  4. Celts believed that on hallows-eve the barrier between the living and the dead was more accessible.
  5. During Samhain, bon fires were created as people gathered to sacrifice animals to their deities.

Back History of Trick-or-Treating In America

  1. All soul’s day, a derivative of Halloween named by the church, began in the 9th century.
  2. Some believe it was a way to replace Samhain, but was very similar in nature
  3. Eventually, a distinctively American version of Halloween came to be.
  4. American European Additions: Parades, dancing, dressing up like devils, demons, and angels, parties, fortune telling, and ghost stories.
  5. Trick or treat (Candy grabbing) became popular and replaced the ritual of soul cakes being passed out by wealthier town folks.
  6. The Celts also had a ancient trick-or treat ritual. They would leave food out while celebrating Samhian. The food was left out in hopes of driving away unwanted spirits.

According to history.com, “Poor people would visit the houses of wealthier families and receive pastries called soul cakes in exchange for a promise to pray for the souls of the homeowners’ dead relatives. Known as “souling,” the practice was later taken up by children, who would go from door to door asking for gifts such as food, money and ale”.

Is Halloween Still A Day For Un-godly Practices and Modern-day Pagan Worship?

Yes, witches, Wiccans, and devil worshippers are very active on Hollow’s eve and Halloween to be exact.

There are activities, ceremonies, and rituals that take place through the years; however, these two days are known to be the most important days of the year for them.

After all, this is when the veil between the living and the dead is the thinnest so talking to the dead becomes paramount.

In particular, women and men who are affiliated with the Wicca religion do not see their practices as harmful or evil. Here are some of the things that are practiced:

  1. Witchcraft
  2. Casting spells
  3. Black magic
  4. Tarot card readings
  5. Imbuing crystals

On the other hand, I stumbled upon an article where Anton Levy, the founder of the church of Satan, was interviewed and made a statement regarding Halloween.

He revealed that when a person dresses up in celebration of Halloween in costumes, they are signifying they allow Satan to own them.

Additionally, he went on to say that by adopting these pagan practices a person is subconsciously dedicating themselves to the devil.

He also seemed to take pleasure in the fact that parents are allowing their children to take part in these activities.

Bible Verses For Reflection and Insight

Even though the bible does not specifically mention the word Halloween or recognize it as a holiday to be celebrated, there is much that the bible has to say regarding the types of practices surrounding Halloween.

2 Corinthians 5:8

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Insight: here we see that to be absent from the body is to be present with the lord. This gives us an assurance that all spirits are with God and cannot be talked to.

1 Corinthians 10:21

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons too.

Insight: This is self-explanatory. You cannot partake in the work of evil and also partake from God.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. Good news: We must abstain for anything that appears to be evil

Insight: Here we see that we must abstain from the appearance of evil. Appearance is the keyword here. If it appears to be evil, then it is not for us.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12

Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices, the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.

Insight: This scripture instructs us not to be found with any of the following: divination, sorcery, witchcraft, spells, or consulting with those who consult with the dead.

Revelation 21:8

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Insight: The key reflection here is regarding those that practice magic. Practicing magic is something not pleasing to the Lord.

Leviticus 19:31

“Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the LORD your God.

Insight: The reflection here is again showing us that God does not prefer that we use psychics and mediums, nor does he favor consulting with the dead.

Isaiah 8:19

And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?

Insight: The reflection here is to remember to consult with God not the dead nor with mediums.

There are so many layers to Halloween. Halloween has evolved over the centuries; however, there are still roots that date back to the Celtics who were clearly not interested in glorifying God.

Even in the modern-day, Halloween is still a day where specific activities are taking place that is far worse than children dressing up in costumes and collecting candy.

And that is to not celebrate Halloween or do any type of activities related to the holiday.
