Spending Time With God Tip #1: Utilize Your Travel Time
We are all traveling in our cars at some point in the day. Whether you realize it or not, this is precious time that you can use to spend with God.
Whether you work an hour away from home or 30 minutes, you can utilize this time for faith-building.
We are not looking for anything fancy here, just a way to connect with God throughout the day.
Utilize this time to purposefully do the following:
- Listen to worship music and sing to the Lord
- Play motivation sermons
- Listen to Christian podcasts and inspirational content
- Play specific prayers that line up with your situation or circumstance
You will be surprised at how much you can get out of a car ride to & from work, the store, picking the kids up from school, etc.
For instance, when I worked an hour away from home, I enjoyed listening to worship music, audio CDs, and inspirational YouTube videos.
You may find it more valuable to add this to your morning routine, as it helps you get your strength up for the entire day!
You may be thinking, well isn’t that kind of dangerous, and it’s not really quality time.
Remember, these tips are all about how to spend time with God with a busy schedule, so you will need to carve out time for a deeper connection.
Plus, it’s not the length of your time with God but the sincerity of your time with God.
The Holy Spirit is not subject to time and doesn’t have a time requirement before he shows up.
A sincere and willing heart is the biggest thing that matters when it comes to getting into the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Honestly, I have had some of my best worship sessions in the car, lol. And my cars seem to never have any problems lol.
Spending Time With God Tip #2: Practice Your Faith At Work
This can be a sensitive subject, practicing your faith at work, but it doesn’t have to be.
The idea is to create your own personal sanctuary at your desk or in your office.
A big part of faith-building is staying encouraged and strengthened, so why not utilize your second home (your job).
By doing this, you will subconsciously and consciously stay aware of God and Holy Spirit which will invite the Holy Spirit into your space.
Some good ideas are:
- Put up inspirational quotes, pictures, and décor.
- Keep a pair of headphones at your desk for a quick inspiration pick me up.
- You can plug them up and listen to podcasts, sermons, audiobooks, music, and so much more. (while you work of course)
- Get acquainted with like-minded people.
- This one can take some time. Pray and ask God for divine relationships and connections. Once that happens, you can connect with these individuals to have conversations about God, pray (when appropriate), and stay grounded.
Again, spending time with God does not have to be ritualistic, religious, or in a church building.
The Spirit of the Lord lives on the inside of you, and you are the church!
Inviting God into your workspace is very mentally and emotionally beneficial, and opens a door for others to come to know Christ (just by watching you).
As a Director at my old job, I allowed the Holy Spirit to flow and work as he pleased.
The atmosphere was very calm, inspiring, and open. We use to play contemporary Christian music, have quick prayer meetings, and quick pow-wows to share our God moments.
Before I knew it, everyone loved coming to my department if they needed to connect with God.
It was never forced or uncomfortable, it just kind of happened.
I wasn’t alone, but I definitely considered it devotional time, and we were surely spending time with God as we spent time with each other.

Spending Time With God Tip #3: Utilize Your Lunch Break
Yes! Your lunch break is a huge opportunity to fit in some quality time with God.
It’s a great opportunity because you get to be creative, take a break from work, and connect deeper with God (if your lunch break is an hour).
Some good lunch/faith-building ideas are:
- Meditation & prayer (in your car or private area around company grounds).
- Taking a walk outside.
- Bringing a daily devotional.
- Journaling in nature.
- Reading the word in nature or in your car.
- Take a ride and listening to worship music.
This can be difficult if you only get 30 minutes. I would suggest purposefully asking for your (2) 15-minute breaks and utilizing that time to talk with God.
If you get an hour for a lunch break you can break it up like this: 30 minutes for eating and 30 minutes for devotional time.
Bringing your lunch makes this a bit easier as you don’t have to spend time grabbing a bite to eat.
Any of these 6 ideas will help you connect with God, but be sure to choose the one that resonates with you most.
You need to make sure it’s something you really want to do, something you enjoy, and something you can commit to.
The last thing you want is to be struggling and working in the flesh to spend time with God. You don’t want it to feel like work!
It’s also nice to be able to mix these 5 tips up from time to time to keep things fresh.
Remember, you are looking for that special moment in the day where you can spend time with God. I like to call it Faith on The Go.
You don’t have much time elsewhere, so sacrificing your lunch break for more devotional time has the following benefits:
Allows you to de-stress from a busy day, gives you time to connect with God, and frees up your evening for other important duties.
Spending Time With God Tip #4: Keep It Simple
Remember how I said, it’s not about the length of time but the sincerity of time that you spend with God.
You do not always have to do elaborate prayers, be in a church, or in a prayer room to have a conversation with God.
The idea here is to just keep things simple! The simpler you make spending time with God, the more you will automatically commune with him throughout the day.
Keeping it simple will help you from thinking you are not prepared, or in the right place for faith-building.
The Holy Spirit inhabits the praises of his people. It doesn’t matter where you are!
You can train yourself to be conscious of the Holy Spirit and make God your constant companion.
As you walk in step with the Holy Spirit daily, you will begin to trust God more, talk to him more, and hear from him more.
Try some of the simple tips below to get in that devotional time:
- Listen to inspirational material while you’re getting dressed in the morning.
- Simply talk to God throughout the day whenever it comes to mind. We can talk to God like we are talking to our best friend, so don’t be shy. You can simply say good morning Lord, good night Lord, or thank you for life today.
- Speak scriptures to yourself. This is fun because it challenges you to memorize scriptures and builds you up at the same time.
Don’t forget, this is all about quality over quantity. God wants to connect with you just as you want to connect with him.
You are not being judged or punished by God if you don’t get it right every day! Your willingness and desire to spend time with him brings joy to his heart.
As you seek God more and more, he will open up the way before you and give you more ideas!
For instance, I love being in nature. Especially when it comes to spending time with God. It makes me feel closer to him.
I asked the Lord to show me a quiet safe place where I could spend quality time with him outside.
As I was on my way home from work one day, the Holy Spirit highlighted this bench at a park. I could see it from the road.
It ended up being one of my favorite places, and I would even be prompted by the Holy Spirit to visit it from time to time.
Spending Time With God Tip #5: Download The Bible App
Having the YouVersion Bible App on your phone is a great way to have biblical resources at your fingertips while you’re on the go.
It’s convenient, inspirational, makes spending time with God and his word easier, and it’s FREE!
If you are not familiar with the Bible App it is a free digital bible resource that has over 6.8 million downloads and users in every country.
What’s great about the bible app is that it provides an electronic version of the bible, and it also has devotional “plans” on various faith-based topics.
The topics are real, relatable, and help you deal with the situation at hand in a faith-based way.
Some of the plans are for 4 days, 7 days, 30 days, etc.
You simply open the app and read the devotional for each day until you have finished the plan.
These plans are free and available at your fingertips plus you can do more than 1 plan at a time.
There are resources for marriage, trials and tribulations, fear grief, anxiety, and hope, just to name a few.
God has recently brought to my attention that I need to get a deeper revelation on the love that he has for me.
One way that I spend time with him is by reading the devotions on love via the bible app. I can read it in my car, on break, or even before I go to bed.
You can also set reminders so you don’t forget to read your devotion for the day.
I absolutely love this resource. It is a great resource for Christians; especially, for devotions.
