What Does Trusting God Really Mean?
So, what does trusting God really mean? The word trust is defined as the assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something.
Psalms 7:1 KJV defines the word trust as, to confide in, to make a refuge, to have hope.
Trusting God means that you:
- Have an assured reliance on him. This word assured here means certainty, so you are confident that you can rely on him.
- Are dependent upon God
- Have confidence in his character
- You are confident in his strength
- God is your hiding place or refuge
- You tell him your secrets
- You have hope in him.
This trust goes deeper than the trust we could give ourselves or get for anyone else in the world!
I have put my trust in myself and in other humans; however, no one has ever given me the sense of assured security that we gain from trusting God.
One thing to note is that trusting God does not mean that you will never have questions for God.
A lot of times we think that if we question God, then we must not be fully dependent on his plan and his ways.
This could not be farther from the truth! I believe that God is open to our questions and our curiosity, so don’t be afraid to ask God questions.
There is a right way and a wrong way to ask questions. I believe that we must always come respectfully and with reverence.
You’d be surprised at the answers you’d get back when you ask.

10 Steps On How To Trust God More
1. Deepen Your Relationship With God
Trusting God more must first start with your relationship with God. If you want trusting God more to be the focal point, then knowing God more must be a priority. After all, you cannot trust someone that you don’t know.
Ask yourself questions like, “How well do I know God”? “What is the character of God”?
I think this is so important because a lot of times we find ourselves battling against things that are not from God thinking that they are.
Once we really understand the character of God, we can trust him more because we trust his motives more. Trusting God will become easier as you deepen your relationship with God.
Some practical ways to deepen your relationship with God are to: spend more devotional time with him, surround yourself with other believers, prayer, and read his word.
2. Get acquainted with his word
Getting more acquainted with the word of God will help you understand truths and unlock revelations that will allow you to start trusting God more.
God’s word is the final authority in your life. If God said it, then it is so. That is something you can have assured confidence in.
As you spend more time in the word of God, trusting God will come naturally. Look for ways to understand what his word has to say about your life.
When you understand that God has a plan for your life, you can take a lighter approach to life because you trust his master plan.
Be intentional about the scriptures and passages that you read. Look for scriptures that talk about God’s plan for your life. Pray and ask God to reveal his purposes for you!
3. Get a better understanding of his love for you
How beautiful is it to know and have confidence in the love that God has for you!
God is madly in love with you! No matter what you have done, what you face, or what you have left undone!
Getting more acquainted with how God feels about you is one of the fastest ways to catapult you into trusting God more.
4. Practice worshiping God
Yes, worshipping is a lifestyle, but I am talking about the act of worship here. Begin worshiping God more and more.
This will bring you closer to God and allow for a deeper sense of intimacy. Certain things are transferred during worship that you cannot experience elsewhere.
Worship creates the perfect atmosphere for you to meet with the Holy Spirit, and become more like him.
During your devotional time listen to Christian worship songs that bring you into the presence of God.
5. Learn to hear the voice of God
The Bible tells us that we live by faith and not by sight, so it’s important to be able to move by the voice of God.
Learning to hear the voice of God allows trusting God to become easier because you’ll become more confident in knowing what to do.
I know for me, I am always concerned with making the right decision (something that needs to stay balanced).
I have gotten into the habit of consulting God before I make any major decisions; however, I had to go through voice lessons so I could hear him answer me clearly.
Pray and ask the Lord for ears to hear. Ask him to help you hear his voice more clearly. Trusting God will not be an issue when you’re confident about hearing his voice.
6. Consider your past victories
Have you ever just sat back and considered all the victories you and God have won together?
If not, try and do this as a spiritual exercise. Nothing builds your faith and has you trusting God more than “considering the scraps” as they say.
Think about all the trials and tribulations God has brought you through. Think about all the times he saved you and kept you from harm.
Doing this exercise takes you back to those feeling you had when God came through for you.
Trusting God means you know that if he did it before, he will do it again!
7. Mediate on scriptures dealing with trusting God
When you have those periods where trusting God seems harder than others, look for scriptures that will strengthen your trust in him. The bible is full of scriptures about trusting God, so take full advantage.
A fun exercise is to memorize some of your favorite verses in this area and meditate on them throughout the day.
Below are a few of my favorites:
- Psalm 138:8 – The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me.
- Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
8. Do not lean on your own understanding- Focus on The Bigger Picture
This one can be a very difficult one, at least I know it was for me.
In my experience, having the need to understand robbed me in a sense when it came to trusting God.
Don’t get wrapped up in your own understanding to the point where you cannot trust God’s ways.
God’s ways are higher than ours and his thoughts are not our thoughts. Letting go of your need to understand will free you to start trusting God’s ways more.
After all, his ways and thoughts are higher than ours. This definitely takes practice as we cannot understand everything that God allows; however, we can trust the character of God. Isaiah 55:8-9
9. Break up with self-reliance
Get a glass of tea and a journal because self-reliance is by far one of the biggest obstacles that keep us from trusting God more!
Self-reliance is one of those things that we are innately born with when we enter into this world. We are taught to look out for ourselves, to only trust ourselves, and ultimately be selfish.
Not to mention life experiences in general, and traumas back up that sentiment. It is a very natural and good thing to be self-reliant; however, it can easily get out of balance.
Self Reliance is defined as the ability to make decisions by yourself without anyone’s help. Sure, this is a great strength to have; however, we must not forget that there is a higher power governing our lives. We must consider God in our decision-making and trust in his ability to take care of us!
10. Break up with the need to control
This goes hand and hand with self-reliance. I’ve struggled for some time with the need to be in control, and have finally begun to scratch the surface of the fact that I am not in control.
I wanted to be in control of my life, in control of my spouse’s life, in control of my circumstances, and especially in control of “outcomes”.
Breaking up with control will take the pressure off you having to figure it all out by yourself, and is a vital step in trusting God more.
It will lead you into looking to someone else for help, guidance, and assurance, GOD!
When you give God the wheel and he comes through, as he always does, trusting God starts to feel right.
You are able to let down your guard! Try giving God the wheel, and let him prove to you that he is trustworthy! 😊
